Land of the Millrats
Published in Hardcover by Harvard Univ Pr (December, 1981)
Author: Richard Mercer Dorson
Average review score:

Overlooked Classic of Folklore Study
It is so good to see this book back in print! At the time it was published, it received luke-warm reviews. I'm not sure why reviewers did not originally appreciate this very fine study. The topic is fascinating. There are engaging discussions of the method Dorson used in studying the lives of millworkers. But the content of the stories that Dorson documents must be recognized as an incredibly important contribution to the historical record. Every chapter is highly readable, and the stories are fascinating, poignant, and moving. There are rich and vibrant descriptions of the vitality of life within steel mills, and the work is an important contribution to preserving a record of an industry that has undergone rapid change. Although some of the major theoretical issues that Dorson addressed are now dated, a reminder that this book was written almost 20 years ago reveals that the book has grown old gracefully. This book is great reading for anyone interested the occupational culture of steel mills and life in a milltown. It is now essential reading for anyone interested in the history of the region.

A tour de force
This is a tour de force on one of the most important yet most neglected areas of the law. I took a course from this book, and it was one of the best experiences I had in law school.

An excellent companion
I bought this book at a bookstore, and after my journey I am so impressed with it I had to write a review. I am very surprised to see there isn't one yet!

This book has everything: the scenic drives, national parks, camping spots, hiking trails, rock climbing areas, mountain biking trails, state parks and forests, discussion on each major town in the Southern Cali - Nevada and Four Corners area (such as place to camp, local coffee shops, the bars with the jam bands)....all this with a special emphasis on the "budget traveler"....and all presented in an organized fashion.

The maps in the book are invaluable. each major downtown city area is mapped well, as are all the national parks.

The sections also recommened hotels and restaurants, but the emphasis is on local hotels rather than chains, and many times the chains are much cheaper. Promoting the local businesses is certainly commendable, but don't commit yourself to their recommendations there unless you feel you have to make advanced reservations.

I spent 8 weeks on the road and all I had was this book and a map of the country to guide me. This book had everything I needed (and more). Thank you, "Let's Go" writers and editors!

Just what beginning reader enjoys!
My 6 year old son loves this book for two reasons: he can read it himself and he loves the adventures of Little Critter.

As the parent, I really appreciate the "values" put into all Little Critter books, and am excited they are now being written for younger readers.

Little Critter's Christmas Book
One of the funniest Critter books yet. A Christmas like any parent can relate to. Just as much fun to read for kids as it is to the parent who can probably remember a few things like this from back when. A must have no matter how old you are.

Little Critters teach the alphabet on their journey.
My son, at age 4, learned the alphabet and the sounds of the letters as we read it nightly ... it was his favorite book.

A is for all. Here we all go. B is for bags. Big bags! C is for car. Little car!

Little Critter's These Are My Pets (A Golden Easy Reader)

Great for Beginning Readers
This title by Mercer Mayer is one of my favorite for early readers. As a teacher, I'm always on the lookout for books that will "hook" young readers and give them the confidence they need to read independently. This book is a perfect mixture of familiar pattern and new storyline. The topic is animals, so most kids are interested from the start. The text is nicely spaced on the page. All of these factors contribute to the title's success with young readers.
